Highlights
Serra Cafema Camp is situated on the banks of the Kunene River in the very remote northwest of Namibia. This area is owned by the Himba people, who are among the last semi-nomadic communities on Earth.
The Details
This is an incredibly quiet and peaceful section of Hartmann’s Valley. The camp features eight en-suite tents, each equipped with ceiling fans and mosquito nets, and is built on elevated decks. The facilities include outdoor and indoor dining areas, a sunken lounge, a swimming pool, and a library stocked with numerous books about the unique wildlife and plant life of the Namib Desert.
The Kunene River, the only source of permanent water in the area, creates an oasis effect near its banks and is home to Nile crocodiles. Other animals found in the vicinity include springbok, gemsbok, and Hartmann’s mountain zebra.
Activities at Serra Cafema focus on the authentic Himba culture and how this community coexists within the harsh conditions of the Namib Desert. Guests can also explore the lush oases along the river, which offer a stark contrast to the surrounding sand dunes. The quad biking trails are magnificent, and great care is taken to ensure the delicate habitats in the area are not endangered. Boating trips along the Kunene River are a must, as they allow visitors to observe how water transforms a desert region. Along the riverbanks, a variety of flora can be seen, and there is a good chance of spotting several crocodiles.
