  The United Republic of Tanzania was formed out of the union of two sovereign states: Tanganyika and Zanzibar.  Tanzania is 945,000 km2 and has about 33 million inhabitants,. The capital city of Tanzania is Dodoma and the largest city is Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has 26 administrative regions (21 mainland and 5 Zanzibar): Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Iringa, Kagera, Kigoma, Kilimanjaro, Lindi, Manyara, Mbeya, Mara, Morogoro, Mwanza, Mitwara, Pemba North, Pemba South, Pwani, Rukwa, Ruvuma, Shinyanga, Singida, Tabora, Tanga, Zanzibar Central/South, Zanzibar North, Zanzibar Urban/West.

Geography
Tanzania is the biggest of the East African countries and borders to Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi to the west and Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique to the south. Eastern border lies on the Indian Ocean.
Tanzania has diverse topographical features like Islands, coastal plains, plateaus and highlands. Another landmark of the country is the Great Rift Valley that runs from north east of Africa through central Tanzania.
To the northeast of the country there is Africa´s highest mountain Kilimanjaro situated and to the north and west are the largest and the deepest lakes: Great Lakes of Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika, that are homes to a great number of fish species.
Tanzania is home to 12 National Parks and many Game reserves, where one can find a great amount of wildlife habitat such as wildebeest and various reptile species.
Climate
Tanzania enjoys tropical climate. The temperatures range between 10°C and 20°C in the highlands and over 20°C in the rest of the country. Between November and February temperature ranges from 25°C and 31°C and it is much colder from May to August (15°C-20°C).
There are two rainy seasons from October to December/March-May in north and northern coast and from December to April in the rest of the country.
Health
It is recommended to take medical advice before leaving for Tanzania. There are several vaccinations recommended such as those against hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever and polio.
There is a certificate required against Yellow Fever for entry into, or travel between, some African countries.
There is a risk of HIV/AIDS and malaria all year and travellers should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
Transport
There are two railway systems in Tanzania, ports such as Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mtwara, Kilwa, Lindi and Mafia, lake transport and three international airports in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar.
There are also domestic flights possible, that link all major towns in the country.
Roads serve particularly rural areas.
Tips for the tourist
There is visa required to entry Tanzania. All visitors require proof of sufficient funds and should hold documentation for their return or onward journey. Passports should be valid for at least six months from date of entry.
