Shumba Camp, open for only five months each year, stands as one of the most exclusive seasonal safari destinations in Africa. This limited accessibility ensures that guests experience front-row seats to some of the most dramatic and thrilling wildlife encounters on the continent, making each visit truly unique and memorable.
Children of all ages are welcome at the Shumba Safari Camp
Named for its resident 'flying lions,' Shumba is celebrated for its lions seen hunting and soaring across the channels that slice through the plains. Guests can anticipate exciting game drives observing these majestic prides. Additionally, thrilling infrared-lit night drives and seasonal boating excursions are available, showcasing snorting pods of hippos and the area's remarkable birdlife. Back at camp, guests can refresh in the crystal-clear pool, savor meals prepared on an open fire, and gaze at the stunningly clear night sky.
The main area of the camp radiates traditional Zambian hospitality, perfect for cooling off in the sparkling pool, dining under the stars, or enjoying fireside stories—a timeless safari tradition.
Nestled on a lush tree island, six elegant tented suites are perched on wooden platforms, overlooking the expansive plains. These spacious and stylish en-suite tents offer breathtaking landscape views, while the shaded verandas, adorned with plush cushions, provide a serene spot for leisurely reflection.
Accommodation
5 Standard Twin/Double Tents
Each spacious and luxurious en-suite tent includes a cosy separate seating area and an open-air shower under the sky, all designed to provide spectacular views of the surrounding plains.
1 Family Room
The camp features a generously sized family room that comfortably accommodates four guests. It is designed as a large room divided by a screen into two sleeping areas, each outfitted with two three-quarter beds. Shared en-suite amenities include both indoor and outdoor showers, a double basin vanity, and a separate toilet, ensuring privacy and convenience for all occupants.
Activities
Game Drives
During game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, guests can observe the renowned lion pride of the Busanga Plains. These excursions might also reveal other predators like cheetahs and wild dogs, as well as a plethora of plains game including puku, red lechwe, buffalo, and wildebeest. There's even a chance to spot the elusive roan antelope grazing on the lush grasses.
Night Drives
Guided by an expert, interpretive night drives on the Busanga Plains reveal the captivating nocturnal life of the area. These excursions might uncover a variety of nocturnal creatures such as genets, civets, and owls, and even offer a rare sighting of the elusive leopard.
Boating
Early in the season, the Busanga Plains are often covered with water, making it possible to explore the meandering channels and their aquatic life by boat, depending on water levels. This unique opportunity is usually available primarily at the start of the season.
Birding
Birding enthusiasts will find a paradise at Busanga Plains, home to hundreds of bird species, including the range-restricted Fülleborn's Longclaw. A specialist birding safari here offers sightings of vibrant rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers, herons, and large flocks of storks, among many others.
Accommodation, all meals, twice daily scheduled camp activities, park fees, transfers to/from the Plains airstrip, laundry and all local drinks - excludes premium imported brands and champagne.
